Learn how to apply for a South Africa visa from Nigeria quickly and easily, without visiting the embassy.

South Africa offers three types of visas: two electronic options and one sticker visa.

This article focuses on the electronic visa, which enables applicants to apply for a South African e-visa online, eliminating the need to submit physical documents to the embassy or a visa application centre.

South Africa E-visa on VFS Global

The South African eVisa program includes the VFS eVisa, which is overseen by both VFS Global and the South African Department of Home Affairs. Developed by VFS Global, the platform initially assisted applicants with document scanning and payment procedures. Currently, users can scan their documents, make payments online, and wait for the embassy's decision.

This platform is limited to countries where VFS has an agreement with the South African Home Affairs.

In Nigeria, where they have the agreements, users can do all of the above and have the visa decision sent to their email.

Here is how you can apply through the VFS system:

  • Visit the VFS Global portal here
  • Sign up with a unique email address and phone number
  • Once you are signed up, log in by requesting an OTP, as it does not allow a user to create a password
  • Click the Start New Booking button and YES, if asked "Do you want to start a new booking?"
  • Select your nationality and purpose of visit, and how long you plan to stay in South Africa before proceeding.

Documents Required for South Africa e-visa

  • A passport copy valid for at least 6 months.
  • Copy of yellow fever vaccination card
  • A 3-month bank statement, which your bank must stamp all pages
  • An introductory letter stating your purpose of visit.
  • Flight and hotel bookings
  • A consent letter should accompany the parents' documents when applying for minors.

Reasons for Visa Rejection for South Africa Visa

  1. Bank statement: If your visa application is denied due to issues with your bank statement, it may be because not all pages were stamped by your bank. Alternatively, if they were stamped, the stamps might not have been clear enough for the officer to verify.
  2. Yellow card: If it lacks a barcode and no stamped page is included, the visa application may be rejected.
  3. Hotel reservation: If the hotel does not provide a confirmed reference number or cannot be reached by phone during the confirmation attempt, the visa application may be rejected.
  4. Minor documents: If you applied for a minor visa and did not include the child's birth certificate, guardian's or parent's data pages, and consent letter, your application will be rejected.
  5. Flight reservation: Ensure your flight reservation is included, even if it is unpaid, as an omission may result in visa rejection.
What happens next after the South Africa visa is approved?
When you receive an email confirming your visa approval, log in to the EPS portal if you applied through that platform, or check your email for the visa attachment if you used the VFS portal.

You may not need to print your visa when arriving at the airport for boarding; a digital copy on your phone is sufficient. However, an OTP will be required if you present the VFS version of the visa.

At any South African port of entry, immigration officers may request to see your visa for verification. Some officers might ask you to log into the portal with your credentials to verify the visa approval page. If completed correctly, you will be granted entry.

It is recommended to book a confirmed hotel reservation, as some immigration officers may contact the hotel to verify your booking.

Business and Conference Visa: Through the EPS and VFS systems, you can apply for a business visa that enables you to attend meetings, events, conferences, and related activities.

Friends and Family Visa: This category permits short-term visits to family or friends, with a maximum stay of three months.
